Write to Gordon Brown to save PRH - Serena Tierney urges letter-writing campaign

14 Jun 2007

Serena Tierney, Lib Dem parliamentary spokesman for Mid Sussex, is calling on local people to join her in a letter-writing campaign to Gordon Brown. She has written asking him to reverse the disastrous Whitehall policies that have artificially created deficits that threaten our A&E and maternity services at the PRH.

Serena says :

"Gordon Brown in his acceptance speech said that he would listen to what people want. He says his first priority is the health service. I have invited him to show that he means what he says by reversing the policies that are driving the likely closure of the A&E and maternity services at the PRH.

Gordon Brown has a great opportunity when he takes over as Prime Minister to sort out the current financial mess. He could replace the lack of vision in the management of our NHS that is driving a 'one size fits all' plan for health services across the country. Instead, he could listen to what people want - accessible local services, especially for A&E and maternity - and deliver it! Showing that he has understood that message would be a good start to his premiership.

I urge as many people as can to join me in writing now while Mr Brown is thinking about how to make a positive first impression as Prime Minister. The more of us who write, the better the chance is that he will take note."

NOTES:

1. The text of Serena's letter is also available for cutting and pasting below:

Dear Gordon Brown,

In your acceptance speech on 17th May, you said: "By listening and learning, I want to become …a voice for the parent, the patient and the public, whom public services must exist to serve.

And when people ask me what I will focus on as prime minister… My immediate priority is the NHS."

I invite you to show that you mean what you say by reversing the disastrous Whitehall policies that have artificially created massive deficits in our local Hospital Trust and PCT that threaten the A&E and maternity units at the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath and many other equally-valued services across Sussex.

Yours sincerely,
