Tories give council chief massive pay hike

23 Sep 2009

Local Tories running Mid Sussex council have given the Chief Executive a massive pay hike. According to council figures, his basic salary in 2008 was £125,000. Now they have hiked it to £147,000 for 2009.

The news came out as the council announced a potential budget shortfall of £1.4m for next year and started consultation on possible redundancies.

Serena Tierney Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesperson for Mid Sussex, said:

"Since appointing him in 2004, the Tories have raised the Chief Executive's basic salary by more than 50% to £147,000. On top of that he enjoys a generous benefits package. This latest increase simply cannot be justified at a time when hardworking ordinary council staff are being told that their jobs are under threat."

Haywards Heath Liberal Democrat Councillor Brian Hall will be raising the issue at the meeting of the council on Wednesday 23rd September.
