Our Pledges to You

Hassocks and Hurst Liberal Democrats

The District Council elections are coming up on Thursday 2nd May. Here are our pledges to you:

Our Priorities

Stand up for local people on planning

We will work to ensure that the planning of necessary housing is informed by local knowledge and priorities, not the interests of developers. We will support the democratically produced Neighbourhood Plan, work to increase the proportion of affordable and social housing, and push for developers to pay more to improve local infrastructure.

Work to improve our environment

We will push for new policies to be adopted that will reduce fly-tipping, reduce food waste and improve cycling infrastructure. We will also make the environment central to planning decisions and new developments. We will push for zero carbon housing, and for developers to incorporate simple measures to improve biodiversity, like hedgehog holes, swift boxes and wildlife planting areas.

Improve decision-making on the District Council

We will break the single-party domination of Mid Sussex, where currently 53 of 54 Councillors are Conservatives who vote with the party whip. Whatever your political views, this is bad for local democracy. We pledge to scrutinise the Council in the interests of local people and make our decisions based on what is best for our community.

How We'll Work

Keep listening to you so we can represent your views

We will be accessible in person, on the phone, on email and on social media, so that you can talk to us about the issues that concern you and we can represent you better. We'll deliver a twice-yearly newsletter to keep you updated on how we are working for you.

Monthly surgeries, including with County Councillor Kirsty Lord

We will continue to hold surgeries every month to help deal with your concerns. In Hassocks, surgeries will be held jointly with Kirsty Lord to coordinate across both District and County Councils.

Work across party lines when it's the right thing to do

We will work with other parties when it is in the interests of the local community. We will not simply oppose for the sake of opposing, but make case-by-case judgements to deliver the best outcomes for our villages.
