One Year
Welcome to my Monday Mail.
As your Liberal Democrat MP for Mid Sussex, I write a short email each Monday sharing what I have been doing and thinking about in the past week.
One Year on from 7th October
It is the first anniversary of the 7th October attacks. In Parliament I will be attending events to mark a year of terrible suffering and loss. As the war escalates and spreads, I only see that everyone is losing. More death, more harm and more hurt, making the peace that surely must eventually come be pushed further from reach.
Pictures tell this story more powerfully than words as these two photo essays in the Guardian show.
UK Harvest in Haywards Heath
Last Friday I spent the morning with the wonderful environmental charity UK Harvest. Their mission is to eliminate hunger and food waste. They do this by redistributing food that would otherwise go to landfill.
Working across the county with West Sussex Recycles, UK Harvest run Community Food Hubs. Once a month in Haywards Heath, they are at The Ascension Church on Vale Road. For just a few pounds, anyone can come and fill a shopping bag with food that would have otherwise gone to waste. As well as sharing food, UK Harvest offers help with menu planning and cooking tips.
Future dates are published here: Haywards Heath Community Food Hubs
What I’ve been reading
I read an article by Anand Menon about racism, how it has changed but how it still persists. I thought it was both personal, but tells a broader story about prejudice today.
Anand Menon on racism: the UK has made progress, but this year’s riots show there’s a long way to go
