Negative Conservatives Have No Alternative to Council Tax

1 May 2004

Commenting on the lack of a viable alternative to Council Tax in the Conservatives' attack document against Labour, Edward Davey MP, Liberal Democrat Local Government spokesman, said: "The Conservative election campaign looks set to be entirely negative because they have no alternative policies to offer voters."With council tax set to be the dominant issue in council elections, it is astonishing that the Tories have no viable proposals to offer.

"The Conservatives complain that Council Tax has gone up 70% since 1997, yet they appear to still support Britain's most unfair tax. "The reason for this is set out in a recent, internal campaign-planning document, urging campaigners to use any issue that will motivate Conservatives to vote.

"Their second bullet point reads: 'Council tax (Tory Alternative?)'."Question marks are no good to the pensioners and poor who struggle year after year to pay increasing council bills."
