Building consensus to treat refugees with dignity, compassion and respect

Local members decided to make September a month of campaigning on the issues faced by refugees.

A team of nine Mid Sussex Liberal Democrats have completed their 'Miles forRefugees' challenge. By walking, running, cycling, and even rowing, they have travelled more than 1400 miles and raised over £3,000 for the Red Cross.

Hassocks Lib Dem county councillor Kirsty Lord secured the unanimous support of the County Council for a motion that recognised the work that the Council does to care for unaccompanied asylum-seeking children. The motion recognised and thanked the contribution that foster families make in helping these children. Asa result of the publicity that the motion generated, Kirsty has been contacted by new people who are considering becoming foster carers themselves.

At the District Council, a motion about how we treat refugees was carried. Noting a large number of Conservative abstentions, Cllr Alison Bennett said, "It some times seems impossible that we will find any common ground on this issue, but Liberal Democrats will continue to make the case for treating these people with dignity, compassion and respect.
