Thursday's elections saw major victories for the Lib Dems as we took control of Three Rivers, South Cambridgeshire, Richmond upon Thames and Kingston upon Thames councils. We also successfully defended our control of Eastleigh, South Lakes, Sutton, Cheltenham and Watford.

Across the country we gained 75 council seats, whilst the Conservatives overall lost 33. Locally we gained seats in Mole Valley and Portsmouth where we are the main opposition. Our special congratulations go to Bob Smytherman who held on to his seat in Tarring in Worthing with a significant majority.

Roger Cartwright, Chair of Mid Sussex Liberal Democrats, said:

"Next year, in May 2019, we have district and town council elections here in Mid Sussex. We are confident of mounting a strong challenge, particularly following the Conservative council's hopeless mismanagement of the District Plan. This week's results give us even more reason to be optimistic.

"Over the next year we will be setting out our priorities for Mid Sussex. We are hopeful that Mid Sussex will elect a strong Liberal Democrat team to represent the interests of local people."
