LIB DEM: WAR - WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?

17 Feb 2007

Serena Tierney, Lib Dem parliamentary spokesman for Mid Sussex, commenting on the release said:

"This is an imaginative and original way to draw attention to this government's continued commitment to the war in Iraq. The producers aim to have the track in the top 20 for March 19th - the anniversary of the invasion. That way Tony Blair will not be able to avoid media coverage of this element of his 'legacy'.

"I opposed the invasion of Iraq in 2003. It was an illegal war, in defiance of the United Nations; a war not of necessity but political choice, on a flawed prospectus and a fabricated threat. It has left 131 British service men and women, 3000 US troops and 50-65,000 Iraqi civilians dead

"That invasion created a moral obligation and strategic imperative to work towards the reconstruction and stabilisation of Iraq. Liberal Democrats have supported this process but this commitment cannot be open-ended and despite progress in some areas, the Government's strategy has failed. There is now a stark choice: change the strategy or else get out.

"Time is running out. Iraq is descending into civil war. Liberal Democrats are pressing for a new strategy led by the UN, providing for a peace process with a reinvigorated reconstruction programme and concerted international and regional engagement. That will involve withdrawing British troops and bringing in peace keepers from countries that are not tainted by their involvement in the invasion in 2003.

"Tony Blair's government continually refuses to address this issue. Help to make it impossible for him to go on avoiding it. I have downloaded this track (in both versions!) already. Please join me in doing so. We need 5000 downloads to get it into the top 20 and force the issue back into the headlines.'

NOTES:

1. WAR - WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?

A version of the classic anti-war song 'WAR' is about to be released by Tony Blair's "re-formed" university band Ugly Rumours.

The producers of the record say:

"We need your help to embarrass Tony Blair. If Blair is in the charts, the media will have to report the success of "his" anti-war hit. To have a top 20 hit in the UK you need only approximately 5000 sales. The track costs £1.50 and we will donate all profits to Stop the War Coalition."
