Alison Bennett's Monday Mail - Why Duty Matters

10 Jun 2024

Welcome to my Monday Mail for 10 June 2024, as I share a few of the things I've been doing and thinking about this past week, including the 80th Anniversary of D-day and garden posters.

Why duty matters

Thursday was the 80th Anniversary of D-day. In the morning I posted on Facebook and Twitter of my memories of visiting the D-day beaches with my parents forty years ago.

By 1984, my father had recently retired from the Army having served for eighteen years in the Royal Signals, and for our family, Remembrance has always been important to us through the years. Commemorating the sacrifice of those who never came back from conflict is so important. Additionally, pausing to thank our armed forces personnel and their families for the sacrifice that they make in times of peace and of conflict matters to me too. This is something that I spoke about at the Liberal Democrats' Conference in September last year on a debate about a Fair Deal for Our Armed Forces. You can watch my speech here (from 2hrs 15 mins).

I don’t think I need to labour my views on the PM’s decision to leave the D-day commemorations early. It was quite simply wrong. But what I will say is that however difficult it may be being a politician, it doesn’t come close to serving in the Armed Forces. Public service is about putting the public need before your own ego, and for me I hope that my parents’ sense of duty is a value that they have instilled in me.

Mega Board

My eternal gratitude goes to the person who risked life and limb to get this mega board up on the side of their house on Saturday.  It is great to see more and more of our garden skateboards and posters up around Mid Sussex!

If you would like a garden poster, you don’t have to take these risks as we have a brilliant ‘hammer team’ who will put the board up for you. All you need to do is complete this form.

Best wishes,

Cllr Alison Bennett
Prospective Parliamentary Candidate
Mid Sussex Liberal Democrats
