Welcome to my Monday Mail for 24 June 2024, as I share a few of the things I've been doing and thinking about this past week, including our tactical voting and how you can help my campaign in the final 10 days.
Let's get tactical
In last week’s email, I shared my thoughts on the policies in the Liberal Democrat manifesto. Winning an election ought to be about putting forward the best set of ideas and voters choosing the party whose ideas they like the most. In the United Kingdom, this isn’t the case though because of our First Past the Post voting system.
As a result, many people instead of asking me about policy, want to know whether they should vote for me as the best ‘tactical vote’ to beat the Conservatives in Mid Sussex.
I am the strongest candidate to beat the Conservatives in Mid Sussex, and this is backed by plenty of evidence: the Liberal Democrats came second in the 2019 General Election, have the strongest base in local government here, and the new boundaries favour the Liberal Democrats.
On polling, we have a number of polling companies calling Mid Sussex as a Liberal Democrat-Conservative battleground. In the last few days, StoptheTories.vote have recommended that in Mid Sussex you vote Liberal Democrat as the best tactical vote.
The icing on the cake was meeting comedian Steve Coogan, where he lent his support to my campaign. What a privilege.
4 things you can do this week to help me win
Steve’s done what he can, but in the remaining 11 days before polling day, what can you do to help?
- Volunteer to be a ‘teller’ on polling day
Tellers are the people wearing rosettes outside polling stations asking voters for their polling card numbers. We have more than 30 polling stations in the constituency, and we need a rota of tellers between 7am and 10pm. Telling helps us know which of our supporters have already voted. It’s a friendly thing to do and you work cooperatively with representatives from the other parties.
