Alison Bennett's Monday Mail - A week at County, with guest contributor Kirsty Lord
Welcome to my Monday Mail. I have been away over half term so I’ve asked Kirsty Lord, our county councillor for Hassocks & Burgess Hill South, if she’d like to write a guest post on what has been a busy week at the County Council.
Hi everybody – for those of you who don’t know me, I was elected 7 years ago to West Sussex County Council (WSCC) and am now the Lib Dem Group Leader there. I live in Hassocks with my family and am a county councillor alongside work and campaigning for Alison to be our next MP.
Budget Day
WSCC spends £2bn on services for us each year and Friday was the annual budget day. I proposed the Lib Dem plan: more money on road maintenance, drainage and children’s mental health than the Conservatives’ proposal.
We also fought to prevent them removing a ction on climate change from the council plan priorities. Given their majority, the Conservative plans passed but we will keep pushing for a better way forward.
Safer Roads, Safer Kids
On Saturday, I visited the new pedestrian and cycling crossing point along Dale Avenue in Hassocks. I first asked the council for a safer crossing here about 5 years ago. Around 1500 children attend the schools on this road and I am delighted that walking and cycling to school will be safer when they start back at school today.
Join me?
There is a very real prospect of the Conservatives losing control of the country council next year for the first time since 1997. Would you like to be part of change for West Sussex? If you’d like a chat about our plans and what being a county councillor is all about, please reply to this email and I’ll get in touch.
Best wishes,
Cllr Kirsty Lord
Group Leader, WSCC
