Alison Bennett's Monday Mail - 522 Lib Dem Councillors
Welcome to my Monday Mail for 6 May 2024, as I share a few of the things I've been doing and thinking about this past week, including a Local Election Round Up and Caring for Carers.
The Liberal Democrats came second ahead of the Conservatives in last week’s local elections
Local Election Round Up
In Mid Sussex
At the time of writing (Sunday morning) we don’t yet know the results of the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner or the Burgess Hill and East Grinstead Town Council by-elections. Results will be posted on the MSDC website when announced. I want to say a big thank you to Jamie, Nelia, Jon and Steve who were our excellent candidates. Regardless of the result, you have all done us proud. Also a massive thanks to everyone who helped with their campaigns. You were brilliant.
In Sussex
The Conservatives have now lost control of every district and borough council across West and East Sussex.
This is extraordinary, when you consider how fast this has happened. The Conservatives now only have control of the two county councils. West Sussex County Council elections are just a year away. If you want to play a part in taking the County Council out of Conservative control, then we would love to hear from you NOW!
Nationally
522 Liberal Democrat councillors were elected last week. We came second, ahead of the Conservatives in both seats won and councils that we run. This is the first time since 1996 that this has happened.
Caring for Carers
I would love it if you read Caring for carers, what next? by my friend Amanda Clark.
Amanda used to be a Lib Dem in East Grinstead until a recent move to Scotland with her husband and Archie, their grown up son who has special needs. In the article, Amanda talks about her life caring for Archie and the work that Wendy Chamberlain MP has done on the Carer’s Leave Act that has now passed into law.
Winning elections is important, and we rightly enjoy celebrating our hard won victories. What we do when we win is what really matters. Wendy’s success reminds me of the difference that the Liberal Democrats can and do make to the lives of millions of people when we hold office.
200 Club
As you know, I am working to make Mid Sussex a Lib Dem win at the general election, but it is a fearsomely expensive business. So I need your help.
We have regular costs like our office and our staff that we need to pay for each month. Would you like to help me grow our regular income AND be in with a chance of winning a monthly cash prize? If you would then join our 200 Club lottery.
We now have 40 people signed up to the 200 Club, and we have space for more people. For £10 per number per month, you pick a number (or numbers) between 1 and 200. Each month your numbers are entered into a draw.
Interested? Please email us and we will send you the details.
Best wishes,
Cllr Alison Bennett
Prospective Parliamentary Candidate
