Campaign Update - 2 Days to Go

With just two days to go until elections to our Town and District Councils it is shaping up to be a straight fight between your local Liberal Democrat Team and the Tories. It is becoming clear on the doorsteps that more and more people are frustrated at the Tories lack of understanding on the issues that face Mid Sussex and people are now turning to the Liberal Democrats and their radical programme for change.

Parking in Mid Sussex
On parking problems the Tories have buried their heads in the sand and deny that the 150% price hike in 2009 has affected local businesses and residents. Their local candidates are even campaigning on "parking problems caused by the town centre" as a result of decisions taken by their own Council!
The Liberal Democrats will reverse this price hike and bring people back to our town centres.
Value for Money
Over the last 4 years the Conservative run Council has wasted over £5 million and now they are denying responsibility and calling this a 'doorstep scare story'.The details of this staggering waste of resources are below. We will look after your resources and make our Councils open, transparent and accountable. We will also hold to account those responsible for spending OUR money and use more local suppliers.

4 years of waste and mismanagement has included:
- £1.7 million buying wheelie bins they thought they were leasing
- £1.3 million in payments to bankrupt developers Thornfield (not to mention the failures of town centre regeneration!)
- £300,000 lost on 'The Big Culture Show' including £54,000 spent on an aborted attempt in 2006
- £133,000 to replace Parking Machines which didn't work
- £1.2 million lost in the fiasco over Car Parking charges despite raising the prices by 150%
- £57,000 a year in overpayments and bonuses to the former Chief Executive, despite some very high profile failures
- An under resourced planning department costing MORE because of cases settled against the Council. This could exceed £500,000
