Black Sack rubbish collection - A new look at Recycling

September 1, 2005 12:00 AM

When the 'black bag' system of waste collection was introduced by the District Council, Liberal Democrats opposed it as wasteful, inefficient and unhygienic. The government has set far higher recycling targets than we are currently achieving and the black bag route is not the way to reach them. The District Council has now accepted Lib Dem argument that if we are to improve our recycling levels we must look, not just for cost savings, but at totally restructuring our waste collection system.

The Council's waste collection contract will be reallocated in two years time and alternative methods of collection and recycling will be part of the new deal. Black bags are unlikely to be one of the considered options, so they should eventually disappear from the District. But not for another two years.

Lib Dems will be involved in a working party, do let us have your views.

Just how many more Tory mistakes will the voters of Mid Sussex have to put up with?
